волоконно-оптический (оптоволоконный) кабель
 Светопроводящий элемент, состоящий из центрального проводника (сердцевины), окруженного оптически менее плотной оболочкой. По сравнению с медным оптический кабель более легок, удобен в обращении и имеет сердцевину меньшего диаметра, а следовательно может быть проложен в более узких местах. Позволяет обмениваться информацией без регенерации сигнала на значительно больших расстояниях, чем медный. Передаваемые по волоконно-оптическому кабелю сигналы являются световыми, а не электрическими, а, следовательно, такой кабель не чувствителен к электромагнитным помехам. Ему не страшны помехи от разрядов молнии и он пригоден для внешней прокладки.
Недостатки оптоволоконного кабеля: меньшая прочность и более высокая стоимость, чем медного. Прокладка кабеля также обходится дороже и требует больше времени.
По количеству волокон кабели разделяются на симплексные (одножильные), дуплексные (двухжильные) и многожильные.
Основные параметры оптоволоконных кабелей приведены в табл. F-2. (В обозначении волокна значения диаметра сердцевины и оболочки обычно разделены знаком косой черты).
